ONFEMME Unleashed

Here's How to Make Friends in NYC
New Yorkers admittedly get a bad rap for being rude, unfriendly, and always in a rush (hey, I’m walkin’ here!). However, in my almost two years of living in the city, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the people I’ve encountered––minus the crazies on the subway. That doesn’t make moving to NYC and making friends any less intimidating, though. If you’re new to the city, don’t despair––there are some sure-fire ways to make great friends and get out of your apartment. Plus, once you make one friend, they can introduce you to their friends, who will introduce you to their friends. Next thing you know, you have a nice big group for weekly trivia nights!
Here are my tips and tricks:
Bumble BFF
While it seems strange to search for friends in a dating app setup, I know many people who have found success with Bumble BFF. It’s a super simple way to find friends who have similar interests. Also, a lot of the people on the app are new to New York as well, so you can plan fun friend dates and explore the city together.
Pick a favorite spot
Whether it’s your neighborhood coffee shop or favorite bar, pick a place to be a regular at. You’ll get to know the baristas or bartenders and you’ll probably end up chatting with some of the locals, which leads to making friends! Even if you don’t make friends right away, you’ll have a spot that feels homey and comfortable.
Join a club
Look for Facebook groups or check out flyers around your neighborhood to join a club that matches your interests! You can easily find a group of people that play soccer, chess, or go on runs! This is a perfect way to get out and about and explore the city while (usually) being active.
Museum events
Museums like the Met or MOMA have special events for young people in New York, which are usually free and have snacks and drinks. You can meet other cool people while seeing some of the best art in the world. Check out their websites and social media to find out when they’re putting on the next event.
Approach people
Okay, this is the scariest one. While it’s definitely intimidating, if you see someone in a coffee shop and you like their jacket, just tell them! Giving a stranger a compliment is an easy way to strike up a conversation and make a friend. A lot of people are also lonely and looking for friends, so chatting with someone new can lead to great results.

What to Wear Based on Your Zodiac Sign
The cherry blossom buds are out and the snow is melting! Start packing away your winter clothes, because spring is just around the corner and to celebrate, you’re gonna need a new outfit. Unsure of what to pick? Turn to your astrological sign for help and you just might find your new favorite fit. Find your sign below to get insights into your astrological sign and what outfit will suit you best. Happy shopping!
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
Aquarians are known for their softness and smarts. Intelligent, intuitive, and a bit introverted means a floral matching set and a demure claw clip is a perfect way to balance your sweet side with your brainy one.
Top Skirt Clip
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
If you’re a Pisces, you’re the ideal team member. You’re empathetic and gentle, making you great in group settings. Stay cozy while you’re getting your hands dirty, metaphorically, with a classic hoodie, jeans, and a pink headband.
Hoodie Jeans Headband
Aries (March 21-April 19)
You don’t mess around with Aries. Independent and strong-willed, and always ready to tackle a new goal means an Aries needs to be comfortable and fuss free in a sweat set with a simple necklace.
Tank top Jogger Necklace
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
Ugh, we love the chillness of a Taurus. Don’t mistake laid-backness for laziness, as Tauruses are very hard-working and fiercely loyal. Stay no-muss, no-fuss, in a classic black tee, cargo pants, and a fun trucker hat.
Tee Cargo pant Hat
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Ah, the duality of a Gemini. You’re curious and emotional (in all the good and the bad ways), yet get along well with everyone. Show off your sensitive side with a cute cami set and a butterfly clip.
Cami Skirt Clip
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Cancers are social butterflies who thrive in small groups and love to channel their creative spirit. Feel flirty and free in a colorful, gauzy set and a big old claw clip.
Blouse Mini skirt Clip
Leo (July 23-August 22)
Leos are the lion for a reason. Impressive, intimidating, and inviting, you’re sure to dominate any room you step into. Show ‘em who’s boss in a sparkly pink set and a classic black headband.
Set Headband
Virgo (August 23-September 22)
Poised, elegant, and organized make virgos extremely productive, and you look good while doing it! A pink frilly cardigan, pleated skirt, and an angel claw clip will show you’re serious, but still sweet.
Cardigan Tennis skirt Clip
Libra (September 23-October 22)
Libras are professionals in self-care and personal reflection, making you highly open-minded and emotionally intelligent. This also means you’re an expert at staying cozy in a thermal sweatsuit and a cute lil’ trucker hat.
Sweatshirt Sweatpant Hat
Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
When you meet a Scorpio, what you see is what you get. Scorpios are known for their sharp edge, authenticity, and independence. Show ‘em what you got in red knit loungewear and a flirty headband.
Hoodie Pant. Headband
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
If you’re a Sagittarius, you’re known for your sense of adventure and admirable bravery. You’re down for whatever and you’ll certainly wear whatever. Wear a funky corset, cargo pants, and a paperclip necklace to show off your bold side.
Corset Cargo pant Necklace
Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
Capricorns mean business. Known for your perfectionism and high standards, you can be a little intimidating but that’s okay, because it’s hot! Wear a no-nonsense matching vest and trousers, with a touch of color in a blue claw clip to work the room.

Put Some Prep in Your Step
If you read last week’s Fashion Month Trend Report, you know preppy style is back in a major way. The runway is loving all things argyle, pleated, and a little bit prissy. I blame this preppy resurgence on the infamous Miu Miu micro mini skirt that slinked down the SS22 catwalk. Luckily, this time around, prep is a little more sexy and a lot more grown-up than its previous heyday when I was in middle school. But also, that may just be because I can wear my cardigans and popped collars without the braces now.
How do you channel your inner prep school coed? Easy. Think of our beloved Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen, and imagine what they might wear in 2023. Bring on the headbands, sweater vests, and tights. Drama optional.
Here’s what I’m wearing to bring the prep back into my step:
1. Sugar Muffs 2. Halo Headband
Never underestimate the power of a hair accessory. Don a pair of earmuffs or a headband to show that you’re a little uptight, but in a hot sort of way.
3. Varsity Knit Vest
In 2023, it’s hot to be a nerd. Straddle the vibes of edgy and preppy with a funky cropped sweater vest.
4. Adelaide Mini Skirt
Since not everyone has the confidence (or the budget) to pull off the Miu Miu skirt, I suggest a skirt that’s still mini but not that mini.
5. Preilla Crop Cardigan
What’s more preppy than a super sweet cardigan? Probably nothing.
6. Glinda Cropped Pullover 7. Marseille Skirt
An argyle sweater set. That’s it, that’s the Tweet.

What to Wear and Read on Your Spring Break Trip
February is a pretty bleak time of the year. It’s cold but it’s no longer the holidays, we’ve barely survived January, and warmer weather seems lightyears away. Luckily, for many of us there’s a little treat known as spring break coming up and if you’re lucky enough to get time off from work or school, you might be jetting off to warmer climates. And if you give a gal a trip, she’s going to ask for a new outfit, or two. Here’s what to wear––and read––based on where you’re going.
1. Petal Dress 2. One Piece 3. Lace Short
Sicily
If you’re ready to live out your White Lotus fantasy (minus the murders) and headed to Italy, you’ll want to strike the perfect balance between classically chic and la dolce vita. A feminine white one piece suit is a great way to subtly flex your Sicilian tan and add a little extra oomph with sexy lace shorts while you stroll around town. Throw on a dramatic floral dress for dinner and you’ll look just as glamorous as Tanya. While you lounge in the Italian sun, read Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman. It’s the perfect bittersweet love story to read between pasta breaks.
1. Long Sleeve Shirt 2. Bikini Set 3. Midi Dress
Maui
In Maui, you’re gonna be all about the florals in a very ‘90s Malibu Barbie kinda way. Lounge on the beach in a printed strapless bikini with matching ruffled bottoms for a flirty look. Be bold by mixing prints, throwing on a floral cover-up shirt to layer. A mint bodycon dress is a perfect piece to pick up for your trip and throw on over your swimsuit. To read, bring Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton, for witty and lighthearted insights into life in your twenties.
1. Corset Dress 2. Mini Dress 3. Snake Ring
Mexico City
In CDMX, you’re gonna want to embrace color, frill, and pattern á la Frida Kahlo. A frilly pink dress with lace and florals will fit right in among the gorgeous architecture and lush greenery. A corset tiered maxi dress is also a packing must for when you’re heading out to dinner or a beautiful park. Add a little bling with a funky snake ring that Frida would definitely approve of. To fit the mood, read The Diary of Frida Kahlo: An Intimate Self Portrait because duh, what else would you read?
1. Bikini Set 2. Mini Dress 3. Stripe Short
Miami
First off, if you’re headed to Miami, you’ve gotta prepare by watching The Bird Cage to get in the Miami mindset. After watching that, you’ll understand the assignment. You’re gonna go for color, opulence, and pizazz. A neon color block bikini paired with striped shorts is the perfect way to stroll along the beach (or the club). To dress up, wear a Versace-esque minidress in a bright color that’ll highlight your tan. Read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid for a riveting story full of juicy Hollywood gossip.
1. Feather Pant 2. Ceramic One-Hitter 3. Feather Cardigan
Your Couch
We know you might not be headed anywhere for spring break, or may not even have a spring break. That’s okay! If the most exciting part of your week is plopping down on your couch, we’ve still got you covered. To feel a bit more luxe and elevated, a matching pajama set with feathered cuffs is the perfect way to stay chic and cozy. If you’re in the mood for a trip of another kind, you might need some accessories to mellow out. Read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson to be so entertained that you’ll never notice you’re not laying on the beach.

If NYC Neighborhoods Were Outfits...
If you know New York, you know that each neighborhood has its own distinct vibe in terms of architecture, restaurants, stores, etc. Sure, there is some blurring of lines––one block you’re in Chinatown surrounded by dumpling shops and the next you’re in Little Italy drooling over a cannoli stand––but there’s a distinctly different feeling between being in Chelsea versus being in Tribeca.
